Introduction

Johor Port is located at Pasir Gudang in southeast Johor in Peninsular Malaysia; it is separated from Singapore by the 1.2-kilometer-wide Johor Strait. The port’s Dangerous Liquid Bulk Terminal is exclusively for handling dangerous cargo, including chemicals, petroleum, and LPG products. The terminal’s Dangerous Cargo Jetty No. 4 (DCJ4), constructed in May 2000, is designed to handle dangerous liquid cargo and began commercial operations on July 1, 2000. It is 338 m in length and is designed to berth vessels with a length overall (LOA) of up to 240 m and between 2,000 DWT and 95,000 DWT. This site is under the jurisdiction of Majlis Perbandaran Pasir Gudang and lies within 1°26’20.28”N 103°52’49.54”E to 1°26’38.23”N 103°52’37.00”E.

Project Goal

DSI was contracted by ASMA/Noor Clean Water to carry out a hydraulic study to assess the impacts of Johor Port’s Dangerous Cargo Jetty No. 4 extension. DSI used the EFDC+ Explorer modeling system to build a two-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic model of the pre-development conditions of the Johor Strait East and calibrate it for water levels and flows. Subsequently, a detailed 2D hydrodynamic model of the pre- and post-development conditions reflecting the existing situation and the DCJ4 Extension scenario was nested into this large-scale model. Post-development conditions were compared with the pre-development conditions for the affected areas. Outputs from the study included before and after project implementation water levels, velocity patterns, sedimentation and scour patterns, and sediment releases.

Application

Recommendations on mitigation measures to reduce the impact of the proposed project on the environment were provided. The study also appraised the potential changes in the existing hydrodynamic regime of the project area and the anticipated impacts to the neighboring coastal properties.

DSI submitted the final model and report to the client in 2011.
